Recycling Project

Currently I am working on a "Texas Recycle" project. I am customizing 26 gal. cans. There is a daytime photo of one in my album. The logos will be lit at night, like an "exit" sign. I am going to try to recycle at the major events in the Austin area (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas are close enough...+/- 3 hour drive). Anyhow, I think some of y'all should take on the project as well. Obviously there is still a problem with not recycling at major events.

Matt

Also, you will want to coordinate the recycling with the coordinators of the events well in advance (at least 6 months methinks).

Sustainable Survivable Community Now Forming in N AZ!

I recently joined this tribe and wanted take a moment to introduce myself and my wife to everybody.
My name is Tim Guiney and my wife is named Viola. I am dad to 5 wonderful young people, and Poppa to 12 precious grandbabies. We live in Phoenix, Arizona. My wife works for the state, and I am self-employed in the alarm business. We are pretty prepared for most eventualities, but as in all things, it is possible to make improvements. We are not militia-types, kooks, racists, rabid fundamentalists in religion, or any of the myriad of other stereotypes and labels that the media and others have painted folks like us to be! We are more like the idea of the scouts (boy or girl). We believe that it is prudent to be prepared for any eventuality. The difference is that we believe that there is a very large possibility that we are entering some very difficult times, and are setting in motion a plan that would make sure that those who participate in the GAPP project will have a place to live, work, play, grow, and have enough food to eat if things get bad. In looking at the various methods of accomplishing these things, we came to the conclusion that this method is the only one that offers all that we were looking for.

We are a part of a group called the Greater Arizona Preparedness Project, or GAPP for short. The purpose of this organization is three-fold:
1) We intend to educate the public concerning the need for individual, corporate, and community preparedness;
2) We are developing a sustainable, survivable, and thrivable community that includes all the principles of preparedness, and that can be duplicated by others with out costing an arm and a leg;
3) We intend to plug into several different organizations which are creating a network of communications between like communities across the country.

I would be happy to e-mail you our promotional material, which includes our Mission Statement, Position Paper, FAQs, Dwelling Unit floor plans, and pictures of the shelter, to anyone who would like one. We have 2 different parcels of land in Northern Arizona:
#1: Is a little over 8 acres on which we are going to construct the Farm and Ranch using a sustainable thrivable platform. We will be constructing all the necessary above-ground buildings needed to meet that purpose. It has an existing underground hardened NBC shelter at 8,800 sq ft that is in complete working condition. We have chosen to call this property Mesa Butte Ranch, Inc.
#2: Is a little over 6 acres that is about 10 minutes from #1, and we will be constructing the dwelling units in that location. At first, we anticipate a working community of approximately 100 adults, plus children that will work Mesa Butte Ranch, and maintain the properties. The remaining 75-150 families will probably continue to operate as normal until the balloon goes up. At that point, the remainder will gather to Mesa Butte Homestead (our community's name, currently).

We are currently seeking for residents those who want to be a part of the solution, and not a part of the problem. All will own shares in the ranch and community, according to the amount of capital they put in. This way no one can be shut out of their investment, etc. Not everything is cast in concrete as of yet, because we need more heads involved in the planning of the project to get it right.

Also, we are looking to network with individuals and communities across the country for mutual benefit, which will fulfill step number three of our Mission Statement.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like further info concerning the GAPP project. My E-Mail is: azsurvive111@gmail, and the office number is: 602-595-2526. My cell number is: 602-290-4784.

We have also created a yahoo group called gappgroup1 (the Greater Arizona Preparedness Project). The address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gappgroup1/ I invite you to go there, join up, network with other members, and peruse all the material we have placed at the site.

Sincerely,
tim and viola guiney

Let's make downtown Phoenix awesome...one step at a time!

To all of you who want to make Phoenix a better place to live, more beautiful to look at, more community minded...or for those of you who hate Phoenix, but are living here anyway...

Let's get together and do something that will make a difference! I've adopted a street downtown, much like the adopt a highway program. I've worked with the city and they've given me Van Buren between 7th St and 7th Ave...right at the heart of downtown.

I realize cleaning up a street and keeping it clean won't solve all of the issues we have in Phoenix, but if that act can inspire others to do other activities to build community and pride in our city...then my mission is truly accomplished!

Please join me and other Phoenicians for our kick off cleaning day on May 3rd! This will be a great way to do something for our community, meet other people interested in making a difference and of course, socialize. If you are interested, please let me know.

If you have crafty ideas to make this day amazing and fun, let me know!

Your body is a universe, let me help you to explore it!

I am a yoga instructor who just moved to Phoenix from Seattle. I like to work with people one-on-one and currently have lots of openings for new students. To drum up interest and community, for a limited time I am offering sliding-scale private yoga instruction, Reiki sessions, and small group workshops (I dig the barter system!). I am also creating a schedule of free and low-cost yoga classes in gallery and studio locations throughout downtown and in natural areas surrounding Phoenix. I have some beautiful spaces to work with or I can possibly come to you and help you create space for yoga in your home. Private instruction is a brilliant way to learn a lot quickly and to understand what yoga means to you.

I help you to create energetic openings with yoga postures and infuse these openings with energy healing. I physically support you as you explore the poses and often integrate other interests such as art, music, swimming, running, hiking etc, to create a practice that is perfect for you. This combined with visualization, meditation, breath work, movement and intuitive massage fills your being with an expansive peace and revolutionary change as the energy flows freely throughout your life.
Pictures and more info are available at people.tribe.net/airina

I look forward to working with you,
namaste,
Airin
p.s my first class will be a free community class at Just Breathe Wellness www.justbreathewellness.com in Downtown Phoenix this Saturday at 11;45....I would love to see your smiling burning faces there!

Greetings Zoners! I'm coming to Phx this week to perform w/ my LED hoop for Rion's set from 9-11pm.

Markus Shultz spins afterwards.

Anyway, In order to promote Rion, I can get a bunch of people on a FREE list if any of you wanna come out to dance.

Here's the deal:

Write me back privately and tell me the name you'll give at the door. (No plus 1's! I need names... real or imagined)

Rion goes on at 9:00pm.

You MUST arrive before 10pm for the free entry.
i need a work/art space

I dont need living quarters. I have my own home already but it is teeny so I have outgrown my daytime workspace (office) and nighttime design space (garments, costumes, jewelry). I also need a space for dance practices.

Ideal space would have one room around 20x20 feet in size or 15 x 25 or somewhere in the range. It needs at least one large, unbroken wall for wall mirrors. Raw or hard floors are best due to traffic from customers who come for consultations and fittings. It needs a bathroom (toilet, but shower/bath not needed) and its own entrance from the street. Parking should be able to accommodate a few cars in the event of group fittings/ small group dance practices. Weekday times are usually quiet, but evenings & weekend days I have more traffic of those needing fittings, design consult, dance practices, etc... thus, more noise.
That said, a private space, unattached to a residence is ideal. I am also a dancer and would utilize the space a couple of times per week for dance rehearsals. It doesnt have to be pretty. As long as it is big, clean, safe, and CHEAP it'll work fine. Office space, a studio, whatever. Anywhere b/t 7 ave and 68th st and b/t Camelback & Broadway is perfect.

$250 Deposit, Jan 1st move-in

Me: 28 years old, biracial, poet/artist by night, work-at-home customer service representative by day, clean, intelligent, respectful, past the partying stage of my life, a good cook, and a good sense of humor...
into: writing, creating, being healthy, watching movies occasionally, cooking, listening to music(I have a record player and cd player that get a ton of use), talking, taking road trips occasionally...

my place: a brand new condo, 2 car garage, w/alarm service, 1400 square feet, upstairs/downstairs, 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths(you would get your own full bathroom).

You: hopeully would also be artistic/creative, clean, no pets(i have a cat, but pets arent allowed, so no MORE pets for fear of being caught), aren't a heavy drinker( so maybe you have a beer or a glass of wine every one in awhile, but don't overdo it), aren't a pothead(although once in a blue moon is forgivable), are probably hippie-ish, have a steady source of income, are in your mid-20's or older, are cool with me being a lesbian(i don't have rainbow flags everywhere though, don't worry, i'm not one of those :) ) Hopefully you are also health-conscious, fun, into sharing groceries and having dinners together every once in awhile, just want a cool, warm place to call home that happens to be really underpriced.

Oct 23rd-Nov 5th: Seeking models, fire dancers, and restaurants

My name is Walker, and I'm a photographer from Orlando. I'll be on vacation in Phoenix from October 23rd through November 5th. I plan to do a whole heck of a lot of hiking (a.k.a. travel & nature photography) while I'm there, but I'd also like to meet up with some locals for a few photo shoots.

Who I'm looking for:
Fire dancers & alternative fashion types.
People with a good sense of humor.
People with a lot of personality and a morning or an afternoon to spare.

What I offer:
Time For Prints, meaning I'll send you prints or a CD (your choice) once I've gotten back and gone through the photos. The number of pictures depends on how well we work together, but I can usually deliver at least 10-20 very good portfolio shots from a 2-hour shoot. If we click, there'll be many more.

I'd also be happy to get some restaurant recommendations. I've gone through the "Favorite Eateries" thread and done a good bit of my own research, but it never hurts to ask. I'll be staying with a friend who says she's walking distance from downtown Phoenix.

Im moving to glendale in august for graduate school and would love some pointers on nice apartments and/or townhouses. Despite being a dj, party organizer, and record label manager, I like my peace and quiet at home and not a party animal of the suburbanite kind, hehe. I have looked a bit online and have just run across a lot of places with bad reviews...noise, theft, shitty construction, etc. I know it may be a long shot but I'd love to find a place with tiled floors instead of heat-trapping carpet. So, being a student, peace and quiet for studying are my main criteria. If anyone knows of some cool places and can pass the info along it would be greatly appreciated!! I'll be going to Thunderbird, so somewhere in close proximity would be good! Thanks!!!

Visiting this week...

Hi folks,

I'm visiting the area this week, and looking for fun things to do. I'll be around until Sunday.

1. Nice restaurant recommendations, especially near Tempe, Scottsdale or Mesa...somewhere nice to take my Mom out to, maybe typical SW or fusion food.

2. Non-Mom oriented evening events...are underground thursdays still going? Other ideas? I like cosy pubs, outdoor, been a burner but into all kinds of grooves.

3. Arty stuff - people keep mentioning first fridays, is there a last fridays too?

Thanks for any tips...let me know if I can buy anyone a beer!

Hi everyone.
I'm looking for somewhere to sit in a dry-steam sauna for hours and hours (okay, maybe not -that- long).
Does anyone know anywhere vaguely near Ahwatukee that has a nice, clean sauna that is:
- clean
- low-key (no one cares what everyone else looks like)
- decently priced
- preferably clothing-optional
?

Thanks.

We also want to catch a show, or festival, or anything we couldn't see in Montana (That shouldn't be too hard), We are both lovers of music (He's a big hiphop head) and the outdoors. Anything coming up?

Two gigs this week -- come to one!

Hey, all:

Well, after an enitre MONTH where I didn't play anywhere, it suddenly occurred to me that gigs don't book themselves. So I have two engagements this week at two different places:

Wedneday, Dec. 6: Stop by the big red clubhouse at Encanto Park, on 15th Avenue just south of the golf course parking lot! I'll be one of three acts playing sometime between 7 and 9. The usual jam session takes place first at 7, as I recall, and then the acts start at 7:30. (I think I'm on at 8. But show up early just in case!) It's FREE!

Then, on Saturday the ninth, I'm playing at a new venue for me and a newer venue for the Valley's folk coffee house scene, the Music Corner. It's located in a rec room at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, on the corner of 15th Avenue and Maryland. If this sounds a bit like Fiddler's Dream, it should. Since Fidd's rents space from the Quakers, the Music Corner does the same thing from the Lutherans. (However, there is no direct connection to the church. Anyone who's heard my act will know that!) Music starts at 7:30 with Jim Pipkin, who can write circles around you, me, and your dog without looking. He's really good. I'm on after Jim.

And just like the Wednesday night gig, admission to the Music Corner is a big fat NUTHIN' unless you wish to make a donation to keep the place going!

Also, if you're looking for the perfect cheap-ass gift for somebody for the holidays, I will of course have plenty of my CDs available for sale. I'll even be singing the one Christmas song I know, the one on my latest CD! It's my version of "Christmas in Arizona," written by my good pal Bill Blankenship and funny as heck.

So come see me this week. It's been a while, love to see you, bring the wife, kids, strangers with money, whoever!

TT

Phoenix Urban Sprawl.

Ok so everyone knows Arizona is vast and wide. But just how vast and wide does Phoenix need to be. I live in Glendale, a suburb of Phoenix--Cities out here are huge compared to back East. Everyday I pass by empty strip malls, parking lots all depressed with hardly any activity going on. IT REALLY IS STARTING TO BOTHER ME. I came here 7 years ago and I can still remember large parcels of farmland, but now they are taken up by housing developments, that doesn't irk me so much-people need a place to live! What bothers me is the waste of space--I went to a Halloween maze and reminisced of all the lost farmland such as these cornfields now turned into ugly drab parking lots--That's why I voted for prop 206 to set aside more state land--I think that is the only solution to the problem.
Anyone else agree?

Hello, peeps! My family will be moving to Chandler in two weeks from Valleho, CA. (East Bay, SF bay area). We're looking for new friends, activities, etc. How do we meet people in Phoenix?! Thanks for any help here. I am a bedroom DJ, burner (although haven't been since '01, but once a burner, always a burner), ex-Faire performer (stopped with death of Black Point in '98), and cumputer geek/gamer.

Did anyone see the Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper Wed. night??

How disappointing. Not the bands, the SOUND. I guess this is what happens when you have 16-year olds running sound in a huge arena.

For both bands, did anyone think the sound sounded a little "muffled"? The only stuff I heard was heavy base, a kick drum, and vocals. I've been to more concerts than I can possibly COUNT (both here in AZ, in Vegas, and especially NY/NJ). I've NEVER heard such bad sound. I arrived for the last 4 songs of Alice Cooper's set and I thought that "OK, maybe it's just his band, his sound guys." Then The Rolling Stones started... and it was the same crap! Again, I don't fault the bands, as both played well... it's just the morons who tinker with the sound that made it nearly impossible to hear any guitars!

OK.. rant over.

What was your take on the show??

Female mixed media artist looking for new model

My name is Nina Pak, I'm a mixed media artist living in the Phoenix Arizona area.
I have an upcoming show in the fall. I am currently looking for new models. The body of work I am currently doing will be large photo transfers onto canvas or paper, which I will paint on. The work I require of a model will be a photo session.
I will then work from these images. You must be 18 years or older. I prefer someone who is not shy about thier body and willing to model nude or drapped, although some costumes will be used. No previous model experience is necessary. I like someone who can move freely, dancers are welcome. Also someone who is able to take direction is welcome.
It is not nessasary that you are "Pretty" (a fashion magazine type). I like flaws and diversity, I like an unusual look. I would also enjoy photographing more ethnic types. You don't need to be tall, it doesn't matter for the kind of work I do.
I work mostly with women, but would be willing to photograh men if thier look inspires me.
I work fast, I perfer natural light, I create a comfortable environment.
My usual arriangement is a trade of prints for your time. I require a signed model release.
I'm generous with my models.
Thank you, please message me on my Tribe page and leave a contact number.

Animals need our help!

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0907toomanydogs0907.html

I become so insensed every time I hear/read these things. I get really pissy when I see you walking your dog, in the summer, on the pavement, but I get more disgusted when I see you walking your purebred (often equates to inbred) dog (although it is your preogative, I just wish when folks want an ego boost -look at my purebred chihuahua that I never intend to show- they would instead buy a fancy car or a new outfit). I get annoyed when I notice dogs and other animals not getting the loving care they deserve (it is your commitment to them). But the most agravating of all is when you dont spay or nueter your animals so that this over-breeding occurs.
Please, help our neighborhoods remain feral-animal free and SAFE. Donate money to those organizations who help the animals so that they can build more facilities (no kill shelters). And when you are ready to adopt, visit the humane society to ease the strain they suffer each spring/summer because of our ignorant human counterpart's stupidity.
Thank you.
Stepping off my soapbox now. (go adopt!)

I'm visiting fron the 2nd to the 5th of November and would loooooove to check out any underground happenings....I dj and help organize trance parties in Portland OR so the trance is my obvious bend, but all in all i'm just looking for good vibes and a moving dancefloor. I'd love to be able to play somewhere but hanging out or dancing is good enough for me! Thanks for any info!!

Tom Chapin at Fiddler's Dream, Phoenix, Sept. 30!

Tom Chapin, long-time folk singer, entertainer and former TV show host will be making his third annual appearance at Fiddler's Dream, 17th Street and Glendale in Phoenix, on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.

Boomers will remember Chapin as the host of the cleverly-written educational program "Make a wish" in the early 70s on ABC. But Tom's a lot more than that. A talented songwriter and musician, his songs cover virtually every topic with intelligence, warmth and humor.

Tom's concerts also include a song or two from his late brother, Harry Chapin. This is a great show. Don't miss it! Tickets are $20 in advance ($22 at the door) and are available at Fiddler's Dream Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during regular hours.

If you are attending the Natium show at Big Daddy's this weekend, and you'd like to buy tickets for Tom Chapin, let me know and I will bring some along to sell to you.

It's going to be a great show. Due to the expected crowd, the concert will be held in the Quaker Meeting House rather than the usual smaller Fiddler's Dream building. Same address though -- 17th St. and Glendale.

Don't miss it!
Call out for Fire Performers, VJ's, DJ's and other Performance Artists

Hey kids
I'm trying to put together a weekly Thursday night freak-fest underground-flavored event in Tempe at an outdoor Tiki-Bar and I'm looking for added talent to put in the mix.

This event will feature guest DJ's spinning Tribal House, Nu-Skool Breaks, Funky Glitch-Hop etc etc along with Fire Dancing. These 2 elements will be the main feature but in addition I am open to bringing in VJ visualists, artists for installations or live art-creation, circus freaks, super-heroes etc etc. Anyone with something creative to add will be compensated for their time and effort and hopefully we can create something lively and lots of fun.

First night will be the 21st of this month (Equinox party!!) So contact me ASAP with a description of what you do and what you can bring to the table.

Also looking for peripheral help ie: door man, security, fire safety crew, design artist. I may also be looking to rent a better sound system if the response is big enough.

You may contact me directly through Tribe.

Thanks!

The Violet Wing A Go Go And Psychedelic Music Review

If you missed the first show you won't want to miss this one. The Wing plays many of the most popular songs from the late 60's. Tom Tuerff opens with folk songs by Bob Dylan, Donovan, The Beatles and some of his own material building the mood for the night. The first set by the Wing is dedicated to Rock and Roll with music by The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Kinks, The Troggs, Janis Joplin and The Who while the second set favors the more psychedelic music of The Doors, The Yardbyrds, Cream and The Jefferson Airplane. The Wing also plays some of the first garage punk music by The Music Machine. And as a tribute to the late Arthur Lee they will do My Little Red Book by Love. So don your tie dyes, bell bottoms, mini skirts and other hippy garb and join us for the Violet Wing experience. The lovely and unforgettable Violet Wing Go Go Dancers will be dancing to both of the Wing's sets.

I'm going out of town on Sunday and am in desperate need of getting my hair put into braids before I leave. Does anyone know of a place where I can get them done at a reasonable price? I want braids that are about a centimeter thick or a bit more. The girls that I was supposed to go to said they would only do corn rows and my scalp is too sensitve for cornrows.
Please help!

need a cupid to shoot an arrow at Burning Man

Gosh, that's a hokey way to say it.

What I really need is for some people to randomly stop by a very easy to find landmark at Burning Man and each drop off a little giftee for my sweetie. It's stuff like a box of band-aids, a pack of chewing gum, etc. They're all tiny, lightweight things and I don't even care, really, whether they get squished on the way. I think he would be awfully pleased.

I'm not going to Burning Man and had mistakenly thought that it wasn't starting until Labor Day weekend so I've waited sort of until the last minute for this.

If you'd be willing to help, please send me a message.

Camera protection from desert dust? (burning man vs phx)

Hi all,

New here, so nice ta meetcha. Thought I'd ask something that's been on my mind:

I'm relatively new to having a camera here in Phoenix, and I'm pondering going to Burning Man as well. I'm not AS concerned about Phx dust although occasionally have been caught in a dust storm, I simply don't use the camera in those moments. But the playa dust has me concerned. I noticed some of you are burners, and figured even some folks here in Phx may have suggestions.

Thanks!

allow me for a moment to hop up on this here soap box an preach to ya'll canine owners for a spell.
when you walk your dog(s) in lets say May, June, July, Aug, Sept in arizona, how come you dont walk them in your bare feet?

um yeah...the pavement can reach temps of 100 to 120 and blacktop is even hotter.
just from my own experience; a petsitter took my dog out for a run one summer. my dogs paws (bloody, raw, burned, pink) took several weeks to heal and he was in a lot of pain.
another example-a friend was in an auto accident in which her vehicle rolled and the scared dog jumped out of the window, in summer, out onto the blacktop. this dog had to have all paws bandaged for months as well as be administered meds and antibiotics.

soooo, if i see you darling daytime dog walkers, i dont hesitate to inform you kindly "your dog's paws are burning."
if you ignore me or get irate with me about my kind advice, i happen to know of a certain sherriff joe and a posse who love to bust folks for animal cruelty. yes, i am that much of an animal rights person that i will make that call.
please consider how hot the pavment is for them. yes, they have pads but so do we. so try it barefoot sometime. i dare ya.

Hello Phoenicians! The tribe formerly known as Urban Paradoxes has morphed into the broader territory of Urban Delights:

This is a tribe for those who love cities, a place to share the Joy of Urbanism. Here we can discuss our own cities and those we love (or not) around the U.S. and world; our urban travels and explorations; and the promises, perils, paradoxes and potential of urban life.

Previous description (Urban Paradoxes): The urban environment is full of paradoxes waiting to be explored. Here is the opportunity to share urban paradoxes and your experiences as an urban flaneur.

Homeless

I've vistited Phoenix many a time on business, usually staying at Camelback or some other nice place. I have never been impressed, though. You see, I don't play golf, and if I am just in need of desert climate, I'll visit New Mexico, which is much more varied and has less urban sprawl.

Yesterday my business took me to the edge of downtown, where I was treated to the sight of a dense concentration of homeless men and women. I must have been in the middle of an encampment, with a dozen sleeping against one cinderblock wall, hiding under heavy blankets to escape the midday sun, and dozens more staggering up and down the streets every few minutes. Phoenix must be in good competition with LA for its homelessness. Outstanding.

I was also impressed with the incredibly dense people you have working at your airport. I have been to airports all over the USA and the world, but Phoenix hands down has succeeded in staffing its giant airport with more idiots than any other.

From the jet, you can see these fancy subdivisions complete with man made lakes evaporating lots of water into the desert climate. I thought there was a water shortage, but I see that is just a myth. Any people who can build man made lakes in the middle of a desert have plenty of water.

No more water for you people.

I know a lot of white trash from pointless places like Las Cruces, NM move to Phoenix. If Las Cruces is your measure of the world, Phoenix must seem grande. And of course many a gang banger from LA has moved to Phoenix.

Now tell me, why the fuck would anyone want to live in Phoenix? Honest to God, what excuse do you have for this giant fart out in the desert?
